If you play outside, you might have heard the phrase, "Cotton kills." This well-intentioned meaning might be a bit shocking. The story behind this oft-used saying is cotton absorbs and retains water, sweat then fails to retain body heat. Your core temperature might drop which creates a possible hypothermic state.

Rowing is no different than other outdoor sports and activities. Rowers generate a lot of body heat as the physically hard work begins. Our clothes need to be comfortable so our minds can focus on the task at hand. Protecting us from the elements is our clothes' next priority. Thirdly, wearing bright colors, referred to as, "HI-Viz," helps others see you.

New rowers might be focusing more on body mechanics and technique. So, a novice might not exert as much physical energy. Intellectual and emotional energy levels at this stage of the game, however, are in overdrive. It's a good idea for newbies to wear an extra layer.
